Empty Homes

About Empty Homes

An empty home can cause problems. If it's not secure, it can attract squatters, vandals and burglars. The garden can become overgrown and filled with rubbish, and can soon become an eyesore. If it gets very run-down it can become a safety risk too.

Report an Empty Home

Empty homes bring down an area and threaten the health of the local community. To report an empty home please Contact Us.

Advice and assistance for owners of empty homes

The Empty Homes Officer is available to give advice and assistance on options for bringing empty properties back into use.

What options are available?

Options include:

  • Owners re-occupying the property themselves.
  • Letting and managing the property themselves to private tenants after advice and assistance on being a landlord and how to conduct an Assured Shorthold Tenancy.
  • Managing the property themselves through the Council’s homes4u scheme.
  • Letting the property by means of a Letting and Management Agent.
  • Selling the property to an agent or developer.
  • Receiving financial assistance to bring the property back into a condition so that it can be re-occupied.
