A Nationwide Building Society and First Light Film Project for Swindon
Thanks to all the fantastic work created by the 3000 participants, over 20 media artists, hundreds of youth workers and teachers (not to mention the dedicated Mobile Media team!), ACE had the confidence in our groundbreaking track record to award Mobile Media £30,000 to deliver another programme of work – as always targeting people who may not have opportunities to participate in arts and media work in any other way – and as always pushing back artistic boundaries.
The focus this time around was on smaller, longer projects to give participants a more in depth experience than ever. Also, a new emphasis on bringing a wider range of professional artistic backgrounds to the project, by training up people with unique artistic skills but no previous experience of work with young people or digital technologies made the work created through the project more diverse and resonant than ever.
Mobile Media kicked off in the movie business, with young cre8ives: a Nationwide Building Society and First Light Film Project for Swindon. 50 young people from 3 schools made 3 films over a six month period

Extra seating had to be drafted in to accommodate the enthusiastic guests at a Mobile Media launch event hosted by Nationwide at the end of March.

Profiling Mobile Media’s new programme of work, which hits the road with young cre8ives: a Nationwide Building Society and First Light film project for Swindon, the Mobile Media team were joined by young cre8ives groups, funders and local councillors to celebrate the new funding and partnerships achieved by Mobile Media.
The young cre8ives from the Caribbean Saturday Club, Hreod Parkway Boffin Group and Commonweal School Dyslexia Unit were spurred on by the entertaining and challenging pieces compiled from work made by young people over the past three years – from teenage pregnancy to Holocaust Memorial, through to animated cats at discos – all of life and more was represented!

Guest speakers Cllr Jemima Milton (SBC Lead Member for Environment and Property),
Nationwide’s Andrew Litchfield (Social and Environmental Responsibility), First Light’s Angela Topping and Swindon Borough Council’s Strategic Arts Officer, Helen Miah,
all reinforced the importance of participating in the arts and the excitement of using new digital media to get young people’s messages across and make a difference to their lives and their
communities.
All this plus refreshments, goody bags and the newly commissioned Mobile Media / young cre8ives T-shirts – what more could you want?!

The Caribbean Saturday Club filmed a documentary celebrating Caribbean Culture, exploring traditional stories, hair and food with filmmaker, Gurchetan Singh. The children had fun working with Gurch and Cameraman, Trevor Davis. Sonya Beale, the Youth Worker said “Gurch and Trevor are very easy going and the children seem to have warmed to them. I think the club might find life without the camera boring.”

Commonweal School Dyslexia Unit wrote and filmed a sci-fi drama, Horror High, using cutting edge animation techniques, working with local animators, the Evil Twins. They were fortunate to have the opportunity to work on their script with David Collier, Script Executive on Granada TV’s My Parents are Aliens and to work on the 3D animation with the Evil Twins using Cinema4DR9. ''Reliable, Hardworking and completely mad. The ability to produce Simpsons quality work on a stick figure budget means that having these particular Evil Twins on board would be a blessing to any animation project!'' -John Byrne The Stage

Keith Phillips came to cre8 in the early nineties to learn about screenwriting. He was a children's author at the time ('Fortress of Morphillus' and 'Siege of Sardath') and was keen to broaden his skill base. Unfortunately, someone sat him in front of an edit suite and he was hooked. He has edited and directed numerous corporate and community videos for local industry and community groups. He edited the documentary 'Crossing Over' which was broadcast on Carlton. Druva, a dance film which he directed and edited, was shown at the launch of a new organisation called Youth Dance England at The Royal Festival Hall in February 2005. He is currently re-reading the Harry Potter series with a view to getting back into writing for children. Honestly - that's the reason.

Phil Ball is an experienced Cameraman using Super-16mm & 35mm film, digital video, Hi Def, slow motion, time-lapse photography, thermal imaging and Infra-Red, under water and on land. His television work has been mainly for the BBC's award winning Natural History unit on an impressive range of programmes including 7 programmes in the Natural world series, British Isles: A Natural History, with Alan Titchmarsh, and the forthcoming ‘Planet Earth’ and ‘Life in the Undergrowth’ Series. His production credits range from ABC Kane in the USA to Granada International and Oxford Scientific Films and The RSPB film unit in the UK working with Presenters such as Robert Winston & David Attenborough and subjects as diverse as HRH The Prince of Wales and the humble Bumble Bee.

Evil Twins have produced animation for nearly a decade, working for clients such as Granada Television, World’s End Productions, Yorkshire Television and shows such as Adam and Joe and the Big Bang for CITV. They teach animation at the Animation Station in Banbury and at cre8 studios. The amazing twins are also responsible for this website!
David Collier is currently Assistant Producer on 'My Parents are Aliens' for Granada Kids, for whom he also works as a development script executive. He trained as a writer at The National Film and Television School and has written for the BBC and ITV. His short films have won awards at the Chicago and Munich Film Festivals. David taught screenwriting on the MA courses at the London College of Printing and Goldsmiths and is script consultant for Salisbury College, cre8 studios and many UK Film Council First Light projects. He is a graduate from Manchester University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gurchetan Singh Since 2002 Gurchetan Singh has worked on eight films. He has recently finished "Man out of Time," as Director, Co-writer, and Editor. In 2003 Gurchetan's film "Ned Warking," with support from cre8, won Best Screenplay at the Portobello Film Festival.

Lizzie Minnion trained in drama and worked as a Theatre Director before becoming a Filmmaker. Since studying an MA in Film & Television Production at the University of Bristol (1999), Lizzie has worked as a Freelance Editor and Director. Lizzie also works as a visiting Film Tutor at the University of Bristol.

Barry Andrews is a Musician, Songwriter and Producer who has worked with XTC, Robert Fripp, Iggy Pop and Brian Eno as well as produced 9 original albums with his own group Shriekback. He has created film music for various TV commissions as well as for contemporary dance projects. His songs are used extensively in the Michael Mann film ‘Manhunter’. He is at present working on another Shriekback album.

Mark Pepperall (hot pepper design) has been working in the design industry for the last 10 years and has built up extensive connections with the Arts in the South West of England. Design and photography are the main areas Mark concentrates on, with current projects including the photographic documentation of the Mobile Media project, publicity for a forthcoming Arts Council film called "One Love" to be released in July and a photographic based commission for the new Bath Roads apartments in Old Town Swindon.
